[speaker not understood] operates 11 hotels in the city and it's spread throughout the neighborhoods as well in downtown san francisco. we support over 800 jobs, local jobs in the city as well. some of our hotels include the [speaker not understood] in japantown, the hotel rex, carlton, laurel lynn at laurel heights, [speaker not understood]. what's wonderful about this initiative is that we know that many of our downtown hotels benefit whenever there is a convention in the city. and what happens is that it creates compression and the business that would otherwise go to this hotels in the city also are spread throughout the neighborhoods such as the laurel

you to talk about a very important project for the future of san francisco economy and job creation. the moscone convention center is one of the most popular convention centers in the united states. it's not the largest, in fact it's number 25 on the top convention centers in the country, but it probably generates the most amount of revenue per square foot of any in the country. it is very much in demand and frankly is at capacity. every time we open the new expansion of the center whether first moscone south, then moscone north then west, the building filled to capacity. we're at the point now we have to take the next step. our plans are asking for additional space. some of our larger conventions who generate a large amount of revenue and tax dollars for the city are forced to look at other options, look at other cities because they're outgrowing our facility. as you know, tourism is is a major economic engine for san francisco. in 2011 we had over 16 million visitors. about 40% of those are international visitors and they spent over -- almost $8-1/2 billion in our economy, generat

the last three or four years, maybe with the economy, things are doing a lot more work without a permit and it annoys me when i hear a contractor didn't get a permit. they are licensed contractors and know for this type of work particularly. there is a loot of investigation time that goes into this and they are not big-money permits so to speak. but we are bound by city charter to investigate the complaints. there are -- to answer your question, we don't keep a list, but contractors should know about and advise homeowners when this happens. i saw they applied for another permit to legalize some rooms on the ground floor which is not part of the violation and there seems to be a contractor in place on that permit and that permit has not been issued yet. i noticed that before i came up to the meeting. >> what is the name of that contractor? >> homeworks construction service, one bedroom and bathroom at ground floor. that permit has not been issued and still has to be reviewed by the planning department. it will probably be an over-the-counter permit, but there seems like there is some

. at the same time, we've got to hear about how renters are feeling the squeeze as well in the current economy as rent continues to rise. as someone who went back on the rental market a couple of months ago i recognize how challenging that is. i have the same concerns that president chiu has brought up. one of course is the fee scale and how that's been set up. i think that 7.4 to 24.7 million for affordable housing is great. i'm not sure if that dollar amounts really makes up for the loss of potentially 1800 units of once rent controlled units being lost in one fell swoop. i think, over all, something that i'm probably most interested in, is what we do for the the next generation of folks that may also get pushed or encouraged into t.i.c. home ownership. i think it's one of the things our city does not want to encourage. the one thing we will never be able to build more of is rent controlled units. that is a depleting stock every year. and we don't want homeowners that can't afford to buy homes competing with tenants in rent controlled units. but i'm very sympathetic to the current status of
